BURNSIDE HIGH SCHOOL
Established in 1960, we are a centre of academic excellence. With 2700+ students, Burnside High School is one of the largest schools in New Zealand, yet each student is known and supported as an individual. Our unique divisional structure and our extensive pastoral network ensure that Burnside High School provides a caring and nurturing environment for our students.
KEY FIGURES AT A GLANCE

Catering to Years 9 to 13, we offer an extensive curriculum of over 220 subjects, combining the core NCEA pathway with Cambridge courses in Art, Mathematics, and Music. Our Music Department is exceptionally outstanding, recently celebrated by student Alex Gibson winning the 'Top in the World Cambridge IGCSE Music' award in 2025. This academic brilliance is backed by world-class facilities, including a new 24-classroom Science and Technology block, two gymnasiums, a heated pool, a 700-seat auditorium, and an upcoming English block.
International students are fully supported by a dedicated four-member International Team, tailored English language (ESOL) classes across all levels, and safe, school-managed homestays. Furthermore, with over 30 sports available, our passionate staff and coaches ensure a vibrant co-curricular life that fosters both physical and personal growth.
SARAH NGUYEN
Student
Leaving home to study in New Zealand was the best decision I’ve ever made. My three years at Burnside High School provided me with not only academic knowledge and language skills, but also the independence and soft skills to become a confident young woman. I hope New Zealand becomes a second home where future generations of Vietnamese students can truly thrive.
